Joan Pirrung, MSN, APRN, ACNS-BC, has been appointed vice president of Patient Care Services-Nursing for ChristianaCare, Union Hospital.
Prior to this appointment Pirrung was director of the ChristianaCare Trauma Program and was a leader of the Musculoskeletal Service Line.
She joined ChristianaCare in 1993 and has more than 18 years of progressive leadership experience at ChristianaCare, which spans emergency, acute inpatient surgical and trauma services.
In addition to her Trauma director responsibilities, Pirrung has held several dual roles with the most recent being interim vice president for Emergency Services for a year.
In her many career accomplishments she has been instrumental in system-wide engagement and influence for positive patient flow outcomes, nursing-sensitive outcomes and regulatory readiness. Through her Trauma Service leadership she provided oversight and coordination for Christiana Hospital Level-1 Adult Trauma Center designation and Wilmington Hospital Level-3 Adult Trauma Center.
Pirrung has presented and published nationally on a variety of clinical topics.
She received both her MSN as a cardiopulmonary clinical nurse specialist and BSN from the University of Delaware. She was awarded a certificate in Healthcare Leadership from the University of Delaware and is attending the Health Management Academy GE Fellows Program for Nurse Executives, Class of 2021. She is board certified as a clinical nurse specialist for Adult Health.
She has received numerous honors including a Delaware Today Top Nurses 2018 recognition and the University of Delaware Alumni Star Award in 2019.
Pirrung reports to Catherine Fernald, DNP, RN, RNC-OB, NEA-BC, chief nursing officer for Acute Care.
